Investment markets have been very volatile over the last 2 years and the JSE All Share Index has produced an annual total return of 6%, which is below inflation and well below the long-term average of 16% p.a.
During these difficult times diversification is imperative and the selection of the appropriate risk category investment is key.
We made a major change in our investment strategy at the start of the year where we materially reduced our foreign currency exposure across our recommended portfolios. At this point in time the Rand/Dollar was 16.68, which has now strengthened to 13.89 (+18%). Our forecast was the Rand would strengthen to below 14 to the Dollar this year. Currently the Rand is very difficult to forecast at this level, but we believe the Rand should be range bound between 12 and 15 to the Dollar over the next year. Hence we recommended a portfolio that has offshore exposure of at least 25%.
